There are now at least four restaurants in my area with Atkins’ friendly offerings: TGI Fridays (five or six entrees and appetizers), C.B. & Potts (a couple entrees), Subway (two wrap-type things that look pretty yummy), and Carl’s Jr. (a lettuce wrapped burger). I think a majority of restaurants will have at least a couple low carb meals available by 2005.

I’ve reached another diet milestone, a healthy body mass index. Got on the scale this afternoon, and I weighed a mere 194 pounds, down 27.5 pounds from the start of this regimen. I’d like to lose ten or fifteen more pounds, but Beth says that’s not allowed. It seems I’m losing my attractive ass as well as my unattractive gut.
To celebrate my achievement I went to Krispy Kreme and bought a dozen donuts. Mmm, warm Krispy Kremes. Of course they’re just terrible for you. They make one donut, the chocolate malted kreme, that has 390 calories, 21 grams of fat (5 grams of the saturated variety), and fifty grams of carb (over half of that is from sugar). No one expects donuts to be healthy, but to put it in perspective a Whopper Jr. has the same number of calories, 1 gram more fat, and 18 less carbs. You eat six of those donuts and you’ve fufilled your USDA recommended carbs for the day (and the USDA recommends you eat way to many carbs. Bottom of the pyramid and all that).
I probably had more carbs in four minutes than in the last two days combined, and I only ate two glazed and a chocolate iced.

I bet Beth last night that with Subway, McDonalds, and Burger King all trying hard to capture the low-fat market it was only a matter of time till one of them (probably Subway) put out a sandwich with under fifteen carbs. Well, it’s happened, but it’s being made by Blimpie and it only has seven to nine carbs in the whole sub.
Also reported is McDonalds’ new diet custimization menu. Low fat, low carb, and low calorie menus are currently available in test markets. I’m guessing that they swap out the bun with something whole grain for the Atkins’ burger, the patty with a veggie burger in the low fat one, and both for the low cal. In-N-Out (which needs to expand a couple of states eastward) is currently selling a burger wrapped in lettuce, which sounds great. I may start asking that burger places substitute a big lettuce leaf for the bun, it’s annoying eating a burger with silverware.
Atkins’ will take over the world!
Update: Damn, normal Blimpie’s bread has over forty grams of carb! I can’t believe they managed to get the whole sandwich (vegetables, mayo, and cheese all have a few carbs) down to eight grams.

I haven’t posted about my diet recently, mainly because it’d be pretty monotonous, posting about eating the same stuff all the time, and also because I haven’t lost any weight in a while. I’m stuck at twelve pounds lost, I can’t seem to drop below two ten. Most likely it’s either alcohol, which I wasn’t drinking when I was losing weight, or coffee, which I also started on after the first two weeks. I’ve tried to stay away from high carb alcohol, having very little beer and absolutely no mixed drinks or margaritas.
I think I’ll cut back on the coffee and booze and see what happens this week.

Yay, I weigh two hundred and fifteen pounds again. It’s been many months since I weighed that little. Six down, forty to go.
This diet is really paradoxical. I’m on a diet, but I’m never hungry, in fact, my appetite is down. This is also the first time ever that my refrigerator has been filled with real food. Usually, it was just milk, butter, eggs, and beer, but now I’ve got chicken, beef, pork, bratwurst, bacon, and salad fixings. Seems strange that I’m losing weight with more food in my house and while cooking more than ever.

I’ve been meaning to post a link to this article from the NYT magazine. It’s all about Atkins’, and Nick Denton pointed it out as the reason for the sudden surge of bloggers on diets almost a year ago. It certainly is the reason I took the idea seriously.
Of course, it also took being forty pounds overweight and finding out my entire family was on it.
Update: Sorry, but now the article is for purchase only. I got it for free last night.

I think I started doing this diet at just the right time in our culture. Lots of things are now low carb, and other things that always have been are now being advertised as such. I just saw an ad for Miller Light that touts their beer having half the carbs of Bud Light. Miller Light has 3.2 grams per twelve ounces, while Bud has 6.6. That compares to 13.2 grams for a regular beer, or 2.6 grams for Michelob Ultra.
I haven’t tried Ultra yet (I will next Monday), is it any good? I’ve heard it tastes like water, but my Dad likes it.
I’ve lost five pounds in under a week, and my energy seems to have returned. Whooo hoo! I want to do a graph of my weight loss for the sidebar, but I can’t figure out a way to do it right.

I’m now down three and a half pounds since I started the diet four days ago. That’s certainly encouraging, hopefully now it’s a pound a day for the next week or so, and I’ll be at around two ten. I love that I don’t have to starve myself on this diet. When I think about it, it makes so much sense. You cut out beer, soda, pizza, and french fries and you lose weight. Duh!
Still low on energy though, maybe that’ll pick up soon. And, man, do I miss alcohol.

Well, I have yet to lose any weight. I was down a pound yesterday, but put it back on as soon as I had breakfast. But my appetite is definitely way down. Three eggs, three pieces of bacon for breakfast, two chicken thighs and some salad for lunch, and I’m still stuffed. So that’s progress, I suppose.
Right now I’m really tired. Isn’t ketosis supposed to give you some giddy energy?

Well, they’re not actually fat, but they are losing weight by going low carb, and I do punny headlines so infrequently I couldn’t pass that one up.
It seemed that everyone in North Carolina was eating nothing but meat and salads. Mom, Dad, ‘lil Sis, my parents’ friends, my buddy Owen. Owen says he’s lost eight percent body fat, my parents and sister have both lost a minimal amount of weight (five to eight pounds), and my Dad’s buddy Ray has cut off twenty pounds.
So I’m going on it too, starting today. I’m drinking my eight glasses of water, which isn’t much of a stretch, and I’ve cut out alcohol, which, surprisingly, also isn’t a stretch. I bought the book, and I went to Super Target and picked up a George Foreman grill and a bunch of meat and salad fixings. I’ll be eating nothing but grilled meat, eggs, and mixed greens (with real dressing!) with water to wash it down for the next two weeks.
I’ll keep ya’ll posted on my weight. Right now I’m at around two-twenty, I want to get to less than one-eighty.
