nano lust
September 12th, 2005
I already have a 40-gig, pre-photo iPod, but I’d really love to have an iPod nano. Was anyone surprised that they could fit a harddrive in a case a quarter-inch thick? And were you even more surprised when you learned that it’s actually flash memory, and that four gigs (with a color screen!) only costs 250 bucks? I certainly was.
I think they’ve nearly reached the limit on how small these things can get. Much thinner and they won’t be able to fit a headphone and firewire jack in the end.

I was thinking the precise same thing about the headphone jack–and damned if I don’t want one of these little things, too. Between the Nano and Xbox 360, I have a feeling that I’m going to be having quite a Christmas.
Shoot…and I thought my little i-Pod Mini was pretty snazzy…Only thing I wonder about is how good the battery life is. That’s the only complaint I have with the mini, and I’ve heard that when the battery finally goes, it’s so expensive to replace, you might as well buy a whole new i-Pod.
You’re right to worry about battery life, Lauren. That’s the one spot where Apple’s competitors have an edge (some of the Sony players are advertised at 30 to 40 hours of charge, compared to a standard iPod’s 10 or so).
And the nano claims to get 14 hours between charges, with is both adequate and disappointing. Especially since it’s a flash device, as opposed to your mini’s harddrive. I assume that solid state memory uses less power than a drive with moving parts, so I was expecting 20 hours or so.
You can buy external battery packs that take standard AAs now, but that’s kinda kludgy.
BTW, your mini is still pretty snazzy. But I don’t think that formfactor is long for this world, not if Apple can manage to squeeze six gigs of flash in the next-gen nano for 250 bucks.
Yeah…my mini will be a dinosaur by next month. But it’s pink! And what’s more important than that???
According to this you’ll soon be able to change your nano into almost any color you want, including one called “Cotton Candy”, for $65.
Color screen, tiny, and pink.
Naturally I bought my iPod mini less than a month ago. D’oh! Then again, the nano may just be a little too small. (I look at something like this which, although really cool, would get lost in about 3 seconds.)
Yeah, like I said, they are nearing the point where they just can’t get any smaller for a variety of pratical reasons. But it will help with convergence devices. If your cell phone is too small, and your MP3 player is too small, maybe they’ll be just right if they’re squished together.
Hell, Gizmodo had some calculations that showed that glueing your nano to your RAZR made a cell phone/MP3 player that was smaller and had more capacity than the new ROKR.
