Oliver in a snit (again)
Oliver Willis wigs out over the humorous remarks of a Republican congressman. Rep. Gibbons said that it was “too damn bad we didn’t buy [the hippies and liberals] a ticket” to be human shields in Iraq. The Big O says this “endorses the murder of liberals.”
The congressman’s remarks are certainly edgy, and perhaps he crosses a line when he wishes that we’d helped the human shield hopefuls die. But buying someone a ticket so they can be a voluntary human shield is murder? Try again, Oliver.
Oh, and what does Willis think of the honorable Sen. Byrd comparing Republicans to Nazis? We don’t know. As usual, he only criticizes the opposition’s controversial remarks and doesn’t even attempt to defend a top Donk’s truly reprehensible language.

Gibbons is more than just “edgy”,he’s an immoral man. He needs to be voted out of Congress ASAP – even Trent Lott caught hell for much less. And as to Byrd, it’d be fine if he got of the Senate. I personally have no feelings for him.
Sorry, Gibbons’ comments just aren’t as bad as Lott’s or Byrd’s. He wished that we’d helped a bunch of people who wanted to die for Saddam do exactly that. How’s that endorsing murder?

I probably should have said they attempted to be humorous. Regardless, inanity isn’t a hanging offense.
I guess I kind of figured you weren’t interested in raising the level of the debate when you called Democrats “Donks,” a time-honored sign that the writer is a buffoon.
Yeah, calling the Democrats a derivative of their own mascot is just the same as calling someone an “ignorant right-wing asshole.”
Perhaps you are correct in saying that his comments aren’t advocating murder, strictly speaking.
Still, they are ugly because they are meant to smear a large percent of our population based not on their ethics, but absurd things as the clothes they wear.
In his view,theoretically, a principled conservative who happens to like Birkenstock shoes is just as evil as a human shield.He may not have outright said that, but if his issue is with the act of going over to Iraq to act as human shield, why did he bring tye-dyed shirts into the mix?

I need to find a full transcript of the man’s speech. The current quotes out there that suggest that Gibbon’s wanted to buy all hippies and liberals one-way tickets to Iraq certainly seem out of context. I assumed that he wanted to send wannabe human shields to Iraq, and I take no offense to that.
If he really did say that all the longhairs should have been sent as shields, willing or not, that’s another matter and he should be reprimanded.
