Moving to 1and1

Thanks go to Ryan for pointing out 1and1’s free hosting offer. 500 meg of web space, 100 meg of MySQL space, and five gigs a month of bandwidth, free! For three years!

Since I’m gonna have to move the ‘puters in the next two weeks I figured I’d move TBOTCOTW there, at least temporarily. I got all my info into the database, installed MovableType, and then tried to build the blog and hit a snag. This error popped up when an entry using the MTAmazon plugin was being built: MT::App::CMS=HASH(0×837bc34) could not find ParserDetails.ini in /usr/share/perl5/XML/SAX. I looked around, and it seems that the makefile for Perl’s XML parser has a bug, and it fails to create ParserDetails.ini in some cases. So I emailed tech support, and hopefully they reinstall the parser soon.

  1. there has got to be some sort of catch. how do they start billing you after the three years? i would probably forget i signed up for it and then get a big bill in the mail on year four. there has got to be a way they get you.

  2. Sounds like you just got in under the wire. Or did they extend the deadline past the 14th? That’s where I’m hosted. Except for their control panel is godawful slow, no troubles. Of course, I haven’t been Instalanched, or anything like that, so how it’ll hold up under load, I dunno.

Hubs: Of course they’ll start billing after 3 years. It requires a valid e-mail address. So they ping you and say, “Hey, time to set up some real billing info here, dude.”

  3. The deal is still valid until the 21st… get in while you still can!

The great thing is, they don’t even ask for a credit card when you sign up. So after 3 years, if you don’t want to pay for them, you just back everything up and say “thanks for the memories guys”. You just need a US or Canadian phone # so they can send you your “pin” (that’s the only real catch I’ve found - one hosting deal per phone #).

The thing is here - they are getting a TON of potential customers, and HUGE word of mouth and publicity… so instead of them having to spend all this money on advertising “we’re starting up! Come pay for our service please!” they’re using that money to pay for 3 years of free hosting for all the word-of-mouth people that promoted them like crazy for free. So there’s lots of goodwill, AND publicity built up… not a bad little idea - it probably earned them a big chunk of cash in actual real paying customers.

  4. Hey guys….Well one thing IS for sure. I can sure use the extra space for my video blogs and other stuff as this would allow me to free up my Comcast space (or mirror it in case it goes down or I lose my space on Comcast).

And considering it lasts until 2007, well WHO KNOWS what the circumstances of the economy as well as my own personal situation will be then? Hell, I might even have MY VERY OWN domain by then (I’m on Tripod now)! And if they’re as good as they say they are, I just might have them host my PAID site too.

Though I have to admit, I can’t help but to look up and wonder if there’s another shoe that hasn’t dropped yet that says TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE on it.

Again….Thanks Ryan for the heads up on this. :)
    Cheers for now everyone :)

  5. I got in on that too, a couple of weeks ago. I searched high and low and read all the fine print, it really seems to be on the up and up. As you said, no credit card was required and the only weird thing was the phone call, but that was cool with me. I will probably only use the space to store pics and stuff that I post, but dayum what a deal.

did you get the “could not find ParserDetails.ini in /usr/share/perl5/XML/SAX” problem figure out yet? thanks. :)

  7. You’ve got the same problem? I’ve complained to 1 and 1, and I’m about to again, but they refuse to fix it “because it’s a shared server”. Oh, so everyone has this problem because you screwed up the installation?

Guess I got what I paid for. :)

  8. 1and1 sucks

Yes, 1and1 does suck. So does their support. But you don’t have to go in circles and wait on hold for hours. Instead, contact this guy:

    610-560-1470

He is in charge of angry customers, I think.
