Pollack on the VMAs
August 31st, 2003
Neal Pollack writes amusingly about the VMAs. He gives exactly as much ink to the Madonna/Britney/Xtina kiss as it deserves, which is just enough to compare it unfavorably to tatu.
I don’t think he understands that Eminem and 50 Cent aren’t exactly cutthroat competitors, though. He mentions that they are head-to-head in four categories, and then makes a big deal about Eminem coming onstage when 50 Cent won. But 50 Cent (I refuse to call him “Fitty,” which is what I also hear Carson Daly say. Not that I watch Carson Daly) is on Eminem’s label, so them being on stage together is less classy than productive advertising.

I wasn’t overly impressed with his article on the VMA’s… he seemed to be trying too hard to get up in arms over a relatively boring and mediocre show. I mean, I guess that’s what he’s being paid to do (my roommate does entertainment writing, and they’re always being harrassed to be more controversial and snarky), but honestly the show just didn’t have all that much to be snarky about.
Sure it did! Any show that celebrates the “talents” of bands like Good Charlotte and AFI over those of Johnny Cash, the White Stripes, and, oh, anyone else, really, deserves to get snarked at.
Plus, Pollack is all snark all the time, it’s not a gimmick or something encouraged by an editor.
